Seed Germination and Planting Information
Growing alpines from seed is easy!
Germinating and growing alpines from seed can be simple and easy! Complex procedures
are not necessary for many of the items we offer. Below are germination procedures we have
found successful. With some easy set up and equipment
you'll
be transplanting seedlings in no time.
In addition to what we have listed below. many people sow the seed and place seed flats
outdoors to be exposed to winter-spring temperature fluctuations. The beauty of this
natural method is that the seed can germinate when the temperature is right. Much
success can be had with this method. We also recommend covering the seed with fine gravel mulch.
The mulch helps moderate the temperature and soil moisture and prevents crown rot on those
fragile seedlings.
An amazing number of alpines germinate at 70° degrees Fahrenheit. With
good technique, you can have healthy & proper sizes plants in
short order. When we grow wholesale for local greenhouses, we need to get seed germinating
and can not wait for spring conditions. We use the methods below with great success. In
the catalog, germination codes are found in [ ]. For example, [JC CS 4wks 70°] would mean
just cover seed lightly, cold stratify for 4 weeks, then germinate at 70° Fahrenheit.
Throughout our catalog you will find these germination abbreviations:
Germination abbreviations

| CS |
Cold stratify - place sown seed in refrigerator, 40 degrees F |
| CF |
Cold stratify - place sown seed in freezer, 5 degrees F |
| OT |
Outdoor treatment - variations in temperature, below and above freezing, help remove
germination inhibitors |
| wk |

| SC |
Abrade the seed on sandpaper or poke with a needle on the side of the seed. Penetrate
seed coat but don't harm the working parts. |
